There is so much we can do to help others, and we have a chance to do it moment by moment, day by day, in our own unique style.
Some of my efforts involve buying jackets, hats, gloves and scarves for those in need; contributing to the food pantry; and sending money to help victims of Hurricane Katrina, the earthquake in Pakistan, the tsunami in Southeast Asia, and the World Trade Center bombings. Sometimes I send money spontaneously to someone expressing need for help in some way.
I also give my service to the world in other ways. I became aware that in order to be of true service I had to feel God's love for me so I could learn to love myself deeply. This was my first act of service to the world. I learned to love myself as God loves me. I embarked on a healing journey. Spaces within my heart opened wide. As this happened, I became more and more able to listen to God and to let God guide me into my service to our Universe. I am learning to give up control, to honor the guidance without hesitation.
My service began with my counseling and energy healing work. I am able to hear what's being said beyond the words that are spoken, and I am able to listen and hear the body and what it calls for. I listen with my heart. My heart beats joyfully when someone I work with feels I've really heard what he or she is feeling. I often feel that I should be paying my clients because I receive so much each time I sit with them.
In 1995, while in my master's degree program in Humanistic Psychology, we had to work in groups to do a final project for the entire class. My group did ours on Guided Imagery, and I was the one who guided the class through the imagery exercise, which coordinated with soft music. A woman said to me that my voice was so soothing and asked if I had a tape of a meditation she could buy. I was touched by her kindness, but at that time it had never entered my mind that I'd have anything of value to offer. My self esteem was struggling to deal with a divorce, a very small income, and trying to finish college so I could support myself.
Several years ago I became aware that my guidance was to take the messages of love and healing I heard in my waking hours and in my dreams and write them down for people. I taught a full semester class for the College of Metaphysical Studies last year and did a blessing and gift from the guides and angels for the class at the end of each session. Again, someone asked if I had a CD he could take home with him. At that moment the owner of the center stated, "I know someone who can record it for you!" It was meant to happen at this time. I recorded Song of the Soul and Dancing in the Light. I found someone to produce them locally and began to offer them for sale at my office and at classes I taught.
Something happened then that changed the course of things. I donated some copies of the CDs to the WAVES Gathering in Chicago for the silent auction. Then a woman who had no money and was in dire distress came to my office, and I gave her one. I found myself giving away the CDs where they were needed. I then recorded Healing Circle and Gifts of Presence and found that across the world, there were people whom the CDs could help. So, when moved, I sent them out to many, and many wrote to say that they found great peace and healing within these simple CDs. This CD ministry has taken on a life of its own, and my heart is joyful when I know someone will take time and give him- or herself the loving gift of quiet and healing.
The gifts have been returned to me a thousandfold. The most precious gift is in understanding that service to the world can be given in many ways. Each one of us must find the ways that resonate within. Each one of us has incredible uniqueness and gifts to offer, and each one of us responds to the universal cry for assistance from that unique space.
Together we can create the world we only imagined in the past. Imagine.
