...I knew that God had placed them there as warring angels...who believed in God and loved him enough
to give their lives to his service.

Love Littering
by Kristen Foley
The true leaders in this world (and by leaders I mean folks Jesus would want us to look to as role models -- and for useful, solid direction in life or a task) have one important quality that I have noticed. They have the ability to communicate lovingly with others. As I have observed this, I have noticed that it is often as if these people leave a "piece of love" -- and loving intention with others with whom they are communicating. Betty uses the Lakota Sioux word "macooa", meaning "a piece of my heart" (or I leave with you a piece of my heart), and that is what I see true leaders leaving with others in their communications. I see this quality well developed in Betty.

This quality of leaving love wherever one goes is no small thing. In fact, it is the only positive form of littering, as it spreads the seeds of joy, which take hold and sprout. It is the most important version of the ripple effect in action. It is the passing of the torch of God's light from one person to another. It is how we reveal the Kingdom within us to each other. It is how others see Jesus in us, which is perhaps the truest measure of whether we are living our true nature as God's children and as brothers and sisters. Leaders are in every station in life. Perhaps this is one of the most important qualities of a leader, for if a person does not leave his fellow man with a piece of love in his interactions what does he possess worth following?

Last night, I helped an older man in the grocery store. I went to get him a key from the service desk for the grocery-store wheelchair cart. This was an easy task that I was glad to do, but this man was so appreciative, with the most sincere expression on his face; he called me "the salt of the earth". This made me feel so good! Not because I was thinking, "Hey, I'm pretty great!" but because I could see how much my simple action had made this man feel. I felt like I reminded him that there are people in the world who are happy to help.

Sometimes I think there is nothing better in this world than those times when we remind others that "people are essentially good". In those moments we become the highest versions of ourselves. Those are our Jesus-moments! They are always simple and unexpected moments of helping others -- often in ways that seem so minuscule to us. We are just doing the simple kindnesses that seem, in those moments, to come naturally, perhaps because they exemplify our true, divine nature. And it is in moments like these, when we perform these simple acts of kindness, that we are filled with the most joy our heart can hold!!

To me, that man in the wheelchair was a leader, because he left me with a piece of love by his words; I felt so uplifted by our interaction that I had this beaming smile walking into the grocery store. You don't see that too often! So, who helped whom? The best interactions leave all parties feeling that they were the ones gifted by the shared communication. And I guess that is how we utilize the opportunity to become leaders for each other. The possibility of giving away pieces of love by our words and actions is always there in every moment. Giving away pieces of anything else only serves as an obstacle to what each of us truly desires -- to be only love for others and to see only love in others. When our communications do anything else, it is as if we build a little roadblock there and hang a sign that says, "Under Construction". Really, it is we, rather than that relationship with the other person, who are under construction. We are constructing our ability to love others as God loves us -- unconditionally and 24/7.

As we all continue our journey toward trying our best to live lovingly, we are reflecting sparkles of God's light to each other, and we are filled with the joy that comes from seeing God in our midst on earth. We know He is all around us, in everyone, in everything, because, of course, He is The Master at leaving a piece of His love and His heart in everything he does. In fact, He leaves nothing else but love, which is yet another form of proof that we are made entirely of love. Everything else is just a foggy, misty illusion. Like all fog, it will burn off as we let the Light come streaming in through the doorway of our hearts. God blessed us with His love, and we are called to pass it on.

Much Love,
Kristen
