Mitch Albom, author of Tuesdays with Morrie, has written another
heart wrenching story. It is titled, The Five People You Meet in Heaven.
It is a fictitious tale of one man’s journey to heaven.
This man is named Eddie. He is 83 years old at the time of his death.
Even though he is so old, he continues to work at the same job he has
had most of his life, a job his father had before him. He is an amusement
park maintenance man.
On the day of his death, Eddie is making his rounds. He is checking
the rides when an accident occurs. A car falls from a ride. Eddie pushes
a little girl out of its path. In the process he gets hit by the car
himself, resulting in his death. As he makes his journey to heaven, he
doesn't know if he saved the little girl.
The
five people he meets turn out to be people who played roles in Eddie’s
life on earth. Some played larger roles than others, but each changed
the path of Eddie’s life. As they recall the part they played,
they also have a lesson for Eddie to learn. In the end he still wonders
if he saved that little girl. He gets his answer and finally reaches
the end of his journey to heaven.
The author also includes stories of a few of Eddie’s many birthdays.
I believe this is to give the reader more insight into Eddie’s
life.
I hope this review piques your interest in the book. I would have shared
with you the five lessons, but I feel you should read them for yourself.
I know this book is fiction, but it has meant a lot to me. It was released
the same year my mother passed away. I am hopeful that she is one of
the people I will meet in heaven, for that was a lesson she taught me:
When you die and go to heaven, you are reunited with your loved ones.
I guess I will not know if this is true until I make my way to heaven,
but this book has been a comfort to me and possibly a sign that my Mom’s
lesson was true.
I highly recommend this book. God bless and happy reading to all.
