...I knew that God had placed them there as warring angels...who believed in God and loved him enough
to give their lives to his service.

The Christmas Tree

Yesterday we finally got around to putting up our Christmas tree. When all the lights and ornaments had been hung, I went to get the crèche - a lovely set of figurines set in a little wooden shed. Our family has owned and loved this little manger scene for over 25 years. Each year I usually place it on the mantel, on the piano, or in a small "niche" in our brick wall.

In other years I have placed gifts for my family under the tree until they assemble on Christmas Eve. This year, however, my three grown children and their families will not be coming to our home to celebrate Christmas. For the first time in over 30 years, we will all be gathering around another Christmas tree, at the home of my daughter and her family. The gifts will be taken there with us.

It looked so empty under the brightly decorated tree. Suddenly, I had a moment of inspiration. Taking the little wooden manger scene, I tenderly placed it under the tree: Mary, the Mother, with Jesus, her Baby; Joseph, the protective father; the shepherds, wise men, cattle and sheep. A small angel smiles down above the shed.

Our Christmas tree is now complete, even without the brightly wrapped packages underneath the tree. I feel at peace and happy as I look at it. The great Gift that God has given us - that of His Son, Jesus Christ - is the only Gift that is needed to make Christmas complete.
