...I knew that God had placed them there as warring angels...who believed in God and loved him enough
to give their lives to his service.

A Task Assigned
by Jim Fly

A while back, I had to leave work early for a dental appointment and decided to stop by the post office on my way home. When I walked in, I spied a coworker in line that I hadn't seen for awhile. Seeing me, she waited for me while I finished my postal transaction.

When I walked over to say hello, I noticed she looked pretty bad. She had no makeup on, her hair hadn't been combed, and her eyes were red from crying. We went outside, and she told me she was on medical leave for an upcoming double mastectomy. She gave me a rundown of the various doctor appointments she had just come from, and I could see she was pretty overwhelmed. It was clear the day had not been a good one for her.

Interestingly, I immediately knew God had set this up for us to run into each other. It was if the realization was just suddenly in my mind. Despite her misery, a thrill went through me as I realized God was using me. The whole of it was laid out before me in my mind: It was the middle of the afternoon, when I normally would have been at work, in a post office in a different part of town than where I live, and I had run into a coworker at precisely that moment. The phrase "no coincidences" leapt to mind.

Well, as she prepared to leave, I gently said, "Bev, I'll pray for you." Gratitude flooded her face, and she grabbed me and gave me a huge hug. Her husband, who was sitting in the car listening, had tears in his eyes, and he got out to shake my hand. As I stood there, it occurred to me that I could well be the only person on Earth praying for her, and I was even more grateful that God chose me to do it.

Since then, I have dutifully prayed every day for her and her husband. I have not yet heard how her surgery went, but until I do, I will happily continue with the task God assigned me.
