This Issue's Question:
Tell us about your favorite passage from Embraced
by the Light, and why it's your favorite!
WAVES Answer:
by Marcia Aston
Upon some reflection, I found selecting my favorite passage from Embraced By The Light to be a most difficult assignment. The book is as full of memorable and beautiful passages as anything I have ever read! Every time I read it I gain a new depth of understanding of our eternal destiny. How can any one passage sum it all up?
Perhaps a good number of us -- myself included -- would choose the first few paragraphs of the chapter bearing the book's title. Betty was drawn into the light of Jesus' countenance and felt His utter and complete love for her -- the most unconditional love she had ever experienced. She felt herself to be home at last, as He filled her with His love and comfort. Surely, each of us who read it was moved to the point of tears by the utter beauty of this description of the Savior's love for each of, His children! Perhaps we even imagine ourselves as Betty, a vicarious gain from her experience. After all, it means to me that nobody ever need fear death. We will be One with our Savior. There can be no greater destiny for a Child of God.
And yet, how can I leave out the events directly leading up to Betty's going into the Light? I especially appreciated the description of her frame of mind as she was caught up in the whirling mass (the Tunnel chapter) -- profound feelings of well-being and calmness, peace and tranquility. She refers to it as a "wonderful blackness" within which healing takes place. Love itself fills the tunnel. According to Betty, she had never before felt greater tranquility. What a wonderful prelude to the experience of the Light!
Another favorite passage, found on pages 72 and 73, is when Betty notes Jesus' complete consideration for her feelings, as she does His sense of humor. To her, he was both father and elder brother -- good natured and tender yet responsible and authoritative. He often smiled at Betty and never made her feel uncomfortable. Betty emphasizes the warmth and caring manner of Jesus, and I can certainly relate to that! Gone forever is the stern God of my Presbyterian childhood, to whom one had to pray according to a specific format and to whose "house" one went every Sunday, uncomfortably dressed and forced to "sit still" on a hard bench. Heaven forbid if a child ever even thought of laughing aloud or even of smiling! No wonder this is a favorite passage of mine.
I could find many, many more favorite passages but space would not permit my listing them all. I shall continue to reread Embraced By the Light many times, finding something new and beautiful each time I read it.
