...I knew that God had placed them there as warring angels...who believed in God and loved him enough
to give their lives to his service.

Coach Carter: A Movie Review
by Lynne Newman
Still feeling the effects of my bout with the flu and processing many emotions about some things going on with my dad, I decided to lift my spirits by going out to a movie. Since my friends were all away, I went by myself. I felt moved to share the experience with you. I went to a very small theater in my town. I love it because it is not in a crowded, noisy mall. The movie I saw is a true story about a basketball coach (played by Samuel L. Jackson) who comes to a school where the team is troubled – a familiar story. This powerful movie touched my heart and spirit, though, and here's why.

This is a movie about my vision of the world I'd love to see — it reflects teamwork, love, respect, community, commitment, integrity, taking responsibility for one's actions, compassion, heart & soul... Just when I thought I couldn't be more moved, one of the young men stood up and recited Marianne Williamson's beautiful prayer from her book, Return to Love, which also was used by Nelson Mandela in his inaugural speech. Here are the words:

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant,
gorgeous, talented, fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God.
Your playing small does not serve the world.
There is nothing enlightened about shrinking
so that other people won't feel insecure around you.
We are all meant to shine, as children do.
We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us.
It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone.
And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously
give other people permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fear,
our presence automatically liberates others.

At the end of the movie, several of the men in the audience started clapping. Everyone began to do so. It was a lovely moment. For that one moment we were united in appreciation and open hearts. I am grateful I followed my guidance and went. It was just what I needed today.

Just wanted to share this with all.

Love, much love,
Lynne
