Prayers of Desire

“Once our prayers of desire have been released, we need to let go of them and trust in the power of God to answer them. He knows our needs at all times and is simply waiting for an invitation to help us. He has all power to answer prayers, but he is bound by his own law and by our wills. We must invite his will to become our own. We must trust him. Once we have asked with sincere desire, doubting nothing, we will receive.” -- Embraced By The Light, pp. 104-105.

While most of us probably pray for others the majority of the time, all of us have said prayers of desire for ourselves. Whether it is prayers for our health, our financial situation, our career, our safety, finding our soul mate, or any other desire we may have for ourselves, God hears them and answers them according to His will. We must be open to receiving His answer even if the answer is different than what we expected. Throughout my entire life God has answered many prayers for me and I will always be very grateful, but there is one answered prayer I would like to share with you. This November I am marrying my beautiful fiancée Karmyn Marie, who I truly believe is my soul mate. I am sharing my experience because meeting and marrying her is the answer to one of the biggest and most frequently requested prayers I have made throughout my life going back to a very young age. For many years I have asked God to help me find the right woman to marry and spend the rest of my life with. He probably tired of hearing that prayer over and over.

I tried my best to follow the theme of the above quote from Embraced By The Light but it was very difficult. Although I heard similar things from other people and had read in other books about letting go and trusting God, it was extremely challenging at times for me to trust this prayer would be answered. There were many times I doubted and almost lost hope that it would ever happen, and also times I was a little mad at God for not answering it sooner.

Part of my problem was that patience has been a big challenge for me all of my life, and I wanted this prayer answered immediately. Therefore, the longer the prayer seemed to go unanswered the more discouraged I became. Throw in all the disappointment and pain from broken relationships as well as the constant bombardment of questions regarding why I wasn’t married yet, and the spiral of discouragement continued.

One of the reasons I share this with you is because I know so many people have this same prayer of desire. We are created from God, and God is love, and it is in our divine nature to want to give and receive love. The love we give and receive in a relationship with a significant other or spouse is one of the most powerful forms of love on earth, and it is no wonder so many long for it in their hearts. When we lose that love from a broken relationship it can be extremely painful, and many seek it again.

For those of you seeking to find the right one, simply try your best to trust in God that He will answer your prayer with perfect timing. You may have disappointing setbacks such as meeting someone you think is the right one only to have your heart broken, or you may feel like you make the same mistakes over and over. I know because I have been through all of this myself, but I also know those heartaches and mistakes were some of my best teachers and helped me prepare to meet the one God chose for me.

As we look back now, Karmyn and I can see that God answered both of our prayers at the best time possible for both of us. Neither of us was ready for such a powerful relationship earlier in our lives. He also gave us experiences to help us prepare for each other, and also to help us appreciate each other more. I can honestly say the long wait has been worth it because even though our relationship has its challenges, it is also like heaven on earth.

Before I met Karmyn I was able to finally let go of this prayer and I simply asked God that His will be done in my life. Meeting someone with all of her wonderful qualities as well as someone so spiritual and full of God’s love seemed so far out of reach, but whenever I felt myself losing hope I did my best to have faith it would happen. When it finally happened I knew in my heart and soul she was a gift from God and the one meant for me.

We know now the best way we can thank God for this gift He has given us is to have a marriage that is a model of His unconditional love and forgiveness, and to always appreciate this gift and never take it for granted. When we have children, we will do our best to emulate His love when raising them. We also know that He will simply be lending these children to us for a time, and it is our responsibility to love and protect them, and to teach them about His love. This will be our gift back to God.

When writing this article, the people I had in mind were those who may be wondering if they will ever meet that special person. But even if you are not looking for someone special (if you have found that special someone, remember to thank God every day for that tremendous blessing) simply remember that any prayer of desire you ask of God will be answered at the right time. Just ask God to answer according to His will and out of His tremendous love for you He will answer it in a way that is best for you.

God heard and answered my prayer perfectly. He will do the same for you if you let Him.
