  • James Filter: Big Berkey water filter or Berkey water filter at BerkeyWater.com - "I purchased this big guy in 1999...think Y2K...lol Have never regretted it. When the storm last Jan. was reported coming, I filled the bathtub just in case and got the Big Berkey out. I do not think there is any substance it will not clear out. You might want to read about it at the link." "Most of the serious preparedness people recommend this item."

  • The Encyclopedia of Country Living by Carla Emery. "If I could only afford one book on living off the land, this would be the one. Want to learn how to garden, can, cook, raise chickens/pigs/sheep/cows/bees/etc.? This book has almost 850 pages of info and addresses for where to get additional information. My copy (The 9th Edition)is pretty dog-eared from frequent referral. I've never met Carla, but she taught me to raise chickens, among other things. She realized back in the '60's/'70's that the old-time knowledge was going to die out if somebody didn't write it down. Other than her children, this is her life work. This is one of my favorite books -- and I have thousands of them!"
  • Natural Meals in Minutes by Rita Bingham. "The foundations for her food plan are whole grains and beans, sprouted grains, seeds and beans and simple cheeses made from non-instant milk. Eating her way is cheaper, takes up less storage space and is more nutritious than having prepared foods on hand. Some of us can't afford the more expensive alternatives. Lentil sprouts are delicious, ready to eat in just days and you don't have to weed them or cook them! Sprouting would also be a great way for low-income or even homeless people to get fresh vegetables." (Link to one of the books on Amazon.com.)

  • Native Tech: "I ran across this site when looking for ways to prepare acorns (we have many of them here in Illinois). It is a completely detailed site sharing the skills and craftmanship of the native peoples -- from cooking with hot rocks, to tanning hides, to firing pottery in a firepit, to making wigwams and metalwork. I found it really fascinating. It would take a very long time to learn all the skills, but I am going to try a few simple ones at first -- such as making pine needle tea!"

I've got six books now that I plan on reading to learn to prepare better. I'll admit that I have not actually read any of them yet. I'm working on reading one right now. But some of these books were also recommended by others on the sight, so here it is:

  • "When Technology Fails; A Manual for Self Reliance and Planetary Survival" by Matthew Stein
  • "The Encyclopedia of Country Living" by Carla Emery (both were recommended to me)
  • "Country Wisdom and Know-How; Everything you Need to Know to Live Off the Land"
  • "How to Build your Dream Cabin" by Fears
  • "Cabins" by Stiles,
  • a gardening book: :"Vegetable Gardener's Bible" by Smith.
Hope this helps. Again, I have not read them yet, but I'm feeling that I need to know how to garden, how to build a cabin, how to live off the land, even how to build a well.
  • "I've been really thinking about my pets. In an emergency if I need to go somewhere by foot, what do I do with my pets? I've got cat carriers for both my pets, but it would be hard to carry them across the country!!! So I've been looking for a pet case on wheels. I finally found one. To be honest, I didn't do a thorough search on Emergency Essentials, I've just been looking in pet stores and luggage stores. Well, i finally found it in a catalog I got in the mail called "Catalog Favorites." It's called Pet Stroller, and it's compactable. It's about $50, which is more than I can afford right now. But if anyone is interested, you can find it online at www.catalogfavorites.com. The item number is V65-256."
