The
next two days blurred past. Pat tried to enjoy her children's company.
She knew the visit would be short and that they'd soon be leaving for
their homes and jobs. She dreaded the moment she'd truly be alone - when
she'd have to face the rest of her life. She paid particular attention
to little Allison, who could not understand papa's absence. Heaven was
not comprehensible to the three-year-old who adored her grandfather.
There
were constant interruptions: condolence calls, neighbors dropping by with
food and more food, thank you notes to write, memorials to set up and
the inevitable dealings with the attorney.
"The
police would like you to review the accident report," Bob said when he
stopped by for coffee Saturday morning. "They're preparing charges and
they have some questions about Sam's running routine."
The
loud, pulsating tone roused Pat from her bewilderment. She stared at the
receiver still lying in her lap. She pulled herself up against the door
frame, hung up the phone and walked slowly to the kitchen window. Drawing
back the curtain, she stared out into the back yard. Katie Anders was
across the way raking leaves. Pat opened her patio door and shouted to
her friend, "Kate, I need you. It's Sam."
Katie
dropped her rake and ran through the leaves to the McGrew's deck. "What
is it? What about Sam?" she asked, concern overtaking her as she got close
enough to see Pat's face.
"County
Med Center called. He was out running. There was some sort of accident."
"I'll
drive you. Get your purse. I'll call Bob and have him meet us."
"Paa-aat,
are you in there?" Bob asked, moving his coffee cup back and forth in
front of her eyes. "What do you want to do about the police?"
"Oh,
Bob, I'm sorry. Please, can't it wait till next week?"
"We
have some insurance matters to deal with as well."
"No,
Bob. Not now. No way. I just can't deal with any of that now," she said.
Her throat tightened up and her eyes brimmed. "You've just got to give
me some time." She could no longer hold back the tears.
"Pat,
I understand. I lost my best friend, though I can't imagine what it's
like to lose a spouse."
"He
was my best friend, too."
"I
know. I'll put off the police until next week. And I guess we can't really
do anything about the insurance until the death certificate is processed,
so that can wait too. But Pat?"
"Uh
huh?"
"If
there's anything Katie or I can do..."
"I
know. I'll call you. You two have done so much already."
"Nothing
more than you and Sam would have done for either of us."
