The Adventure's of Caterpillar Jones

The arena of children's books has long been one of education. As adults, we very often publish or write or buy books that are aimed at teaching principles to our young people. Long ago, the tales were often intended to admonish or warn of danger, as with the Brothers Grimm. Then there were books that inspired our imaginations whimsically yet positively, as with Dr. Seuss. Today, children's literature often takes the approach of a dogged political correctness, underscoring values we see perpetuated in the media. These are things with which we may or may not agree. That is why The Adventures of Caterpillar Jones is such a refreshing and important book—it is a return to the imaginative storytelling that helps children understand concepts of a more meaningful and lasting nature.
This first book by J.J. Brothers is the story of Horatio Jones Caterpillar, alias C.J. From the moment of his birth, the reader accompanies C.J. through the fun and trials of life. We share the strong friendship CJ forges with his heroic companion, Sammy, as they race and climb and laugh and learn about the meadow in which they live. We are with CJ when he meets his special friend, Cat, whom he eventually falls in love with and marries. We hold our breath when he encounters trouble—E. Phil Snake. And we are sad when Cat climbs the Tree of Life, leaving CJ alone in the meadow, even though we know it is her time to go. We experience his fears and his triumphs, sliding with him in the seed-pod down Adventurer Hill, and marveling at the beauty of the sunrise atop Ponder Rock. We nod to ourselves at the wisdom of the Great Owl of the meadow, laugh at Petey the chipmunk, and cheer for CJ when he overcomes his fear and makes the transformation to a beautiful butterfly.
The adventures of CJ are our adventures in our own lives. They are a part of our shared experience as human beings. And as we watch CJ confront these timeless difficulties, we learn about ourselves, and more importantly, we are given a charming way to introduce our children to the fundamental lessons of this life. The Adventures of Caterpillar Jones is a book parents can share with their children. It well invite opportunities for mothers and fathers to discuss with their small ones the important changes we all must face—so beautifully typified in the transformation of a caterpillar into a butterfly. It encourages a growth of understanding, while allowing us the enjoyment of joining CJ and Sammy on a charming, funny, and bona fide adventure—life. Have fun!
